이제 유력한 증거가 드러난 이상 진실 규명을 회피해선 안 된다. 의지만 있다면 진실은 쉽게 드러낼 수 있다. 책임있는 국가기관이 나서서 면밀한 검시를 통해 타살 여부를 가리고, 그동안 조사를 거부해온 국정원·기무사 등 정보기관의 자료를 조사하면 된다. 조사권이 없는 행안부가 할 수 있는 일은 아니다.

따라서 행안부는 조사를 맡을 게 아니라 진상조사를 위한 특별위원회 구성과 특별법 제정을 정부와 국회에 촉구해야 한다. 오는 5일 김영삼 전 대통령, 김대중 전 대통령의 부인 이희호씨 등이 참여하는 범국민진상규명위가 발족한다. 평생을 독립운동과 민주화투쟁에 헌신한 위대한 역정이 일본군 출신 독재자 치하에서 의문의 죽음으로 중단됐다면, 오히려 때늦은 느낌이다. 국민적 움직임에 역류하지 않기를 바란다.

그 의문의 죽음은 현대사의 가장 음험한 어둠이었다. 이 어둠을 걷어내지 않는 한 우리 역사와 정치는 바로 세우기 힘들다. 이명박 정부로서는 마지막으로 역사에 기여하는 기회일 것이다. 통합을 위한 100% 대한민국을 선거구호로 내건 박근혜 새누리당 대선후보도 마찬가지다. 한 나라를 이끌겠다면서 정치적 유불리나 가족관계에 매여선 안 된다.

There is new evidence that makes a strong case for Chang having been murdered, and this evidence deserves to be publicly investigated. The government can accomplish this by thoroughly examining the physical evidence now available in order to determine the true cause of Chang’s death.

Once this is determined, the intelligence organizations’ and the military intelligence’s documents on the case must be made public. But this is not the job of the Ministry of Public Administration and Security because it has no jurisdiction over such an investigation. Thus a special committee to investigate this mysterious death must be created with the approval of the National Assembly and backing of the government.

On September 5, the Pan-national Committee for the Truth will be created with the participation of former president Kim Young-sam and former first lady Lee Hee-ho, wife of the late president Kim Dae-jung. This is a praiseworthy development but at the same time it comes somewhat late. How can the killing of an independence fighter and democracy activist by a dictator and former collaborator of the Japanese under colonial rule be justified? The people should know the truth and efforts toward this should not be impeded.

Chang’s died during one of the darkest periods of modern Korean history. Until this darkness is illuminated, our history and our politics will never be truthful. President Lee Myung-bak can end his term by making a contribution to history. This also applies to New Frontier Party presidential candidate Park Geun-hye whose slogan is “uniting Korea 100%”; this could be her last chance to do that. Chang was her father Park Chung-hee’s political adversary. For her to lead the New Frontier party she must first set clear the records about her family and about the past.
