최근 이명박 대통령의 갈지자 대일외교를 보면 한숨이 절로 나온다. 이럴 거면 대통령이 왜 독도를 방문하고 일왕에게 사과를 요구하는 발언을 했는지 알 길이 없다.

이 대통령은 지난 5일 이동관 전 청와대 홍보수석의 주선으로 열린 일본 전문가들과의 만남에서 독도 방문과 일왕 발언 등과 관련해 이런저런 얘기를 했다고 한다. 8, 9일 러시아 블라디보스토크에서 열린 아시아태평양경제협력체(아펙) 정상회의 참석을 앞두고 미리 일본에 유화 메시지를 보내기 위해 마련한 자리로 짐작되지만, 앞뒤가 맞지 않는 게 한둘이 아니다.

이 대통령은 8월 중순 독도 방문(10일)→일본의 국제사회 영향력 저하 발언(13일)→일왕 과거 사과 요구 발언(14일)→노다 요시히코 총리의 친서 반송(24일)으로 이어지는 대일 강공몰이를 주도했다.

MB’s zigzag diplomacy toward Japan

President Lee Myung-bak’s recent diplomatic tactics with Japan are a cause for confusion. Why did he visit Dokdo, then ask the Japanese Emperor to apologize if he was going to start saying the contrary now?

On Sept. 5, President Lee met with a small number of Japan specialists at a gathering organized by Lee Dong-kwan, former Blue House Secretary of Public Relations. There he is said to have discussed problems stemming from his visit to Dokdo and his remarks about an apology from Japan’s Emperor Akihito. That meeting was something of a rehearsal for Lee’s Sept. 8-9 trip to Vladivostok for the APEC meeting. The president was already sending a message of reconciliation by holding such a meeting. Despite the expectation, however, there are many aspects that do not make sense

President Lee in a span of two weeks lead a vigorous offensive against Japan starting with his visit to Dokdo on August 10, followed by a remark three days later about how Japan‘s influence in the world has diminished. The big blow was the comment demanding the emperor’s apology the following day. Ten days after that, he returned a letter that was sent by Prime Minister Noda without acknowledgement.
