Just about three weeks ahead of the National Assembly elections, the words and actions of President Lee Myung-bak are stirring a political controversy. At a workshop for ministers and vice ministers on March 16, President Lee said, “As the nation moves toward becoming an advanced country, the most important thing is political stability.” Opposition parties criticized the remarks as an attempt by Lee to intervene in the election. The explanation offered by the presidential office was that President Lee was just urging people to be wise and unite in preparation for an economic crisis. However this explanation is not likely to stop political disputes.

이 대통령의 걱정스런 총선 개입 논란

4월 총선을 얼마 남겨놓지 않은 상황에서 이명박 대통령의 언행이 정치적 논란을 일으키고 있다. 이 대통령은 그저께 열린 장·차관 워크숍에서 “중진국에서 선진국으로 가는 시절에는 무엇보다 정치적 안정이 굉장히 필요하다”고 말했다. 야당이 선거 개입이라면서 일제히 반발하자, 청와대는 “경제 위기가 올 수 있으니 다 같이 지혜를 모으고 단결해야 한다는 일반적인 언급일 뿐”이라고 해명했다. 그럼에도 정치권의 공방이 그치지 않는다.
