The United Nations (UN) summit on climate change concluded in New York yesterday. The take on this meeting is that it succeeded in maintaining a minimal degree of momentum for the upcoming climate change conference in Copenhagen, where efforts will be made to establish a new climate change agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol that expires in 2012. This conclusion comes from the slightly more sincere approach to discussions evinced by the various countries, including a promise from Chinese President Hu Jintao that his country, which leads the world in carbon dioxide emissions, will reduce its emissions markedly by 2020.

새 기후변화 협약, 미국에 달렸다

올해 말 코펜하겐 기후변화협약 당사국총회를 앞두고 그제 미국 뉴욕에서 열린 유엔 기후변화 정상회의가 적어도 총회의 모멘텀을 살리는 데 성공했다는 평가를 받고 있다. 세계 최대 이산화탄소 배출국인 중국의 후진타오 주석이 2020년까지 배출량을 현저하게 줄이겠다고 약속하는 등 각국이 좀더 진지한 협상 자세를 보인 덕분이다. 코펜하겐 총회에서는 2012년 만료되는 교토의정서를 대신할 새 기후변화협약을 논의한다.
