A funeral ceremony was held yesterday for the sailors of the Geumyang 98, thirty-four days after the trawler went down while taking part in the search effort for missing sailors from the Cheonan. As the bodies of all but two of the victims were not recovered, the funeral took place using items they left behind, including the windbreakers and jackets they wore, making the occasion of sending them off to their final rest even more heartbreaking. We pray for the eternal rest of these noble souls who gave their lives for the community, and we send our deepest condolences to their family members.

우리 사회의 이중성 일깨운 금양호 희생자들

천안함 실종자 수색작업에 나섰다가 침몰한 쌍끌이 어선 98금양호 선원들에 대한 영결식이 사고 34일 만인 어제 치러졌다. 희생자들의 주검조차 찾지 못해 생전에 입던 점퍼·재킷 등의 유품이 유해를 대신했다. 살아온 삶도 쓸쓸한데, 마지막 떠나는 자리마저 그러하니 안타까움에 목이 멘다. 공동체를 위해 희생한 고귀한 넋들이 하늘에서나마 영면하길 기원하며, 가족들에게 깊은 위로를 전한다.
