During a Cabinet meeting yesterday, President Lee Myung-bak said in response to the 2008 candlelight vigil demonstrations that despite much of the conjecture at the time being proven false, not one of the intellectuals or medical personnel involved have shown reflection. Lee said that without reflection, there is no social development, and also ordered a government report be made regarding the candlelight vigil demonstrations.
One feels bitter watching President Lee, who pledged to reflect two years ago while shedding tears, browbeating the people to reflect. Everyone knows that Lee’s reflection lacked sincerity from the very beginning. Even so, the word “reflection” should not have come from his mouth. That would be a bare minimum of courtesy regarding his statement that he was reproaching himself as he climbed the mountain behind the Cheong Wa Dae (the presidential office in South Korea or Blue House) and saw the endless throngs of candlelight.
It would not be difficult to see the historical record created by his government as we can assess President Lee’s hatred and hostility against candlelight vigil demonstrations.
The responsibility for the demonstrations will likely fall on the forces that have spread baseless ghost stories and the childish citizens who have blindly followed them. The ruling Grand National Party (GNP) has already used combative phrases to describe the candlelight vigil demonstrations such as “groups trying to overthrow the Republic of Korea” and “grand scam.” Since the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the police have already released official government reports on the candlelight vigil demonstrations, to release another distorted historical document to the administration’s liking is just a waste of tax money.
The Cheong Wa Dae explained that the president’s order was issued to prevent a repeat of the social tension and division through a reevaluation of the situation at the time, but the phenomenon appearing is quite the opposite. To begin, it is controversial that the president himself praised a Chosun Ilbo feature on the second anniversary of the candlelight vigil demonstrations of 2008. This is because there is considerable criticism that the article distorted the nature of the incident with a biased approach. Moreover, the ruling Grand National Party (GNP) is blatantly exploiting the matter for the regional elections, saying that the forces that lead the candlelight vigil demonstrations are moving like locusts to issues of contention like the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project and free school lunches, trying to find a new spark.
The current task of President Lee is to engage in humble reflection. He should evaluate the extent to which he has realized the pledge he made to the people during a May 15, 2008 prayer meeting. In this pledge, he promised to first change himself before asking others to change. Before talking of historical records regarding the candlelight vigil demonstrations, President Lee should first examine the record of his own statements.

반성 없는 대통령의 ‘촛불 반성 윽박지르기’

이명박 대통령이 어제 국무회의에서 2008년 촛불집회와 관련해 “많은 억측들이 사실이 아닌 것으로 판명됐음에도 당시 참여했던 지식인들과 의학계 인사 어느 누구도 반성하는 사람이 없다”고 질타했다. 그는 “반성이 없으면 그 사회의 발전도 없다”며 촛불사태에 대한 정부 차원의 보고서를 만들 것도 지시했다.

2년 전 눈물을 흘리며 뼈저린 반성을 다짐했던 이 대통령이 국민을 향해 반성하라고 윽박지르는 모습을 보는 심정은 씁쓸하다. 그의 반성에 애초부터 진정성이 없었다는 것을 모르는 사람은 없다. 하지만 그렇다고 해도 자신의 입으로 반성이라는 말을 꺼내는 것은 삼가야 했다. 그것이 “청와대 뒷산에 올라 끝없이 이어진 촛불을 바라보면서 자신을 자책”하고 있다고 한 말에 대한 최소한의 예의다.

촛불집회에 대한 이 대통령의 깊은 증오와 반감이 이럴진대 앞으로 정부가 만들 ‘역사의 기록’이 어떨지는 불을 보듯 뻔하다. 책임은 오로지 근거 없는 괴담을 퍼뜨린 세력과 이에 부화뇌동한 철없는 시민들 탓으로 돌려질 것이다. 벌써부터 한나라당은 “대한민국 체제 전복 집단” “거대한 사기극” 등의 살벌한 표현을 동원해 촛불집회의 성격을 규정했다. 농림수산식품부와 검찰의 백서가 이미 나온 마당에 또다시 정권의 입맛에 맞는 왜곡된 역사서를 만드는 것은 세금 낭비일 뿐이다.

청와대는 이 대통령의 지시 배경을 “당시 상황을 재평가함으로써 사회적 갈등과 분열의 반복을 막기 위해서”라고 설명하지만 나타나는 현상은 정반대다. 우선 이 대통령 자신이 <조선일보>의 ‘광우병 2돌 기획기사’를 칭찬한 것부터가 논란거리다. 이 기사를 두고는 “편향적인 접근으로 사태의 본질을 왜곡했다”는 비판이 적지 않기 때문이다. 게다가 한나라당은 “촛불 주도 세력들이 4대강, 무상급식 등의 쟁점들을 메뚜기처럼 옮겨다니며 새로운 불씨를 만들어내려 하고 있다”며 지방선거 활용 의사를 노골적으로 드러낸다.

이 대통령에게 지금 필요한 것은 겸허한 성찰과 반성이다.“남에게 바꾸라고 하는 것이 아니라 대통령인 제 자신이 모든 것을 먼저 바꿔 나가겠다”(2008년 5월15일 국가조찬기도회 발언)는 등의 다짐을 얼마나 실천했는지를 뒤돌아보는 일이다. 촛불사태에 대한 역사 기록을 말하기 전에 이 대통령은 자신의 ‘발언 역사’부터 들춰봤으면 한다.
